Diablo 4 resume debate again?

One of the most controversial aspects of Diablo IV since its announcement was its move to a fully online mode after being a pseudo-MMO. There has been a lot of backlash, asking Blizzard to reconsider its controversial stance in doing so. Events over the weekend revived the debate.

On Saturday and Sunday, Blizzard's servers came under DDOS attacks, putting the company and players at risk. Along with lag issues and frequent crashes, things didn't quiet down until the attacker dropped the charges. Since then, important players have been taking advantage of the opportunity, chanting "We told you so".

Diablo 4, should it stop online?

"I can't wait for the servers to come back online to play single-player." Those cheeky words started one of the strongest Reddit threads we've seen in the Diablo 4 community. The overall tone of the discourse from more than 33,500 positive votes was fairly straightforward: Thousands of players agreed that it wouldn't be a disappointing weekend if the game stayed true to its roots, with optional online play.

"The MMO element simply doesn't add any benefit to the game," said one user, leading to a debate about the status of players you don't know in your game. While some enjoy the ability to see and socialize with strangers without using a different structure, others say you can already do so in the multiplayer lobby.

It should be kept in mind that the console version of Diablo 3 was received a little later and is an offline method that doesn't require a connection to Blizzard's servers. This change was a positive for many players, but it also introduced a new problem: hacked weapons and items that were then leaked in the game's online modes.

If one thing is clear, it's that adding an always-on feature isn't just a playable decision, but a risky anti-piracy element. While it does protect the game from hackers and pirates, that leaves the whole experience open to failures like this weekend.
